a PC case in a chain-mail bikini aptly named the "Dragon Slayer"...
If I were to build a LAN system today I would probably use this case. Though full size it has a convenient handle and a good style and it’s its less than a 1/10th the price of my beloved Level 10…
I fell in love with this case when when it premiered at CeBIT earlier this year… and now it’s available at the egg… but $850!!! I think this is destined to be an unrequited love…
So here we have it… My PC-TO-GO Mod. I could have done a laptop I suppose. I even considered an Asus C90s but an 8600GT is a FAR CRY from an overclocked 8800GTX. So I broke out the power-tools and drilled some holes in my brand new Lian-Li case. The blowhole & handle kits from MNPCTECH changed the look a lot and were easy to install. The VESA Mount was my own idea.
It Starts with with a LIAN LI PC-A16B all Aluminum Case and adds a 120mm Blow-Hole and some case handles from MNPCTECH.
Tools: 4.5” Hole Saw, Makita Cordless drill, various metal bits, a dremel and an old hand file. Air flow gets an overhaul with Noctua 120mm Fans - 2 Front Intake, 1 Top Exhaust & 1 Rear Exhaust.
Next step? VESA Mount meets Side Panel…
The Goal? An easily movable Gaming PC for both home and LANs… So what do I have to work with?
From the Egg…
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 - 1333 FSB, 2.66 GHz CPU
GIGABYTE GA-P35C-DS3R - Motherboard P35, DDR2 & 3
GeIL Black Dragon 4GB DDR2- 800 MHz Memory
MSI NX8800GTX - Video Card Factory OC 610/2000
SAMSUNG 216BW 21.6” - Monitor 1680x1050 HDCP
Western Digital Caviar SE16 750GB - 7200 RPM SATA Drive
LIAN LI PC-A16B - All Aluminum Case
PHILIPS 20X DVD±R - SATA DVD Burner
GIGABYTE GN-WP01GS - Cheap Wireless Card
MUSTANG MV-STAT1 - VESA Mount
Other Parts from
PERFORMANCE-PCS, MNPCTECH, EWIZ or previously acquired…
GIGABYTE i-RAM & 4GB DDR RAM - A 4GB SATA RamDisk
Machined Billet 120mm Blowhole & Case Handles
Thermaltake W0106RU 700W Power Supply
Various other Mod parts that may or may not make it into the final project.
The hard choices were: the CPU - E6750 vs. Q6600 $100.00 & Lower Thermal Output won out over Quad Core sweetness… Besides if I need it in the future 45nm quad cores will be available.
the Motherboard - Support for both DDR2 & 3 won out over the more feature laden and expensive options from Asus & Gigabyte…
the Hard Drive - 750GB Caviar SE16 vs. 10,000 RPM 150GB Raptor at about the same price 600GB of capacity made the choice for me. Besides according to many reviews the density of the SE16 is almost making up for rotational speed advantage of the Raptor in load time tests.
